Who we are
LAW-BUD ("we", "us", "our") provides AI-assisted UK legal information for England & Wales and Scotland. We are the data controller for personal data processed via this service. You can reach us at privacy@lawbud.co.uk.
Plain-English summary
- We process the chats, documents and uploads you put into LAW-BUD so we can answer your legal questions and store your work.
- Your data is stored on UK/EU servers. We do not sell or share it with advertisers.
- We do use third-party AI providers (OpenAI / Anthropic) to generate answers — your prompt and any attachments you upload are sent to them for that purpose only and are not used by them to train models.
- You can export or permanently delete everything we hold about you at any time from Settings → Privacy.
What we collect
We collect only what we need to provide the service:
- Account data: email, name, plan tier.
- Content you create: chat messages, generated documents, uploaded files (Vault & Knowledge Base), saved deadlines.
- Usage telemetry: question count for billing, error logs (no chat content), the broad model in use ("GPT-4o" / "Claude").
- Payment data: handled directly by Stripe — we never see your card number.
- Voice recordings (optional): only when you tap the microphone. Audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription and is not retained on our servers after the transcript is returned.
What we do not collect
- We do not use cookies or trackers for advertising.
- We do not sell, rent or share your data with third parties for marketing.
- We do not access your browser history, location, contacts, or any data outside the LAW-BUD app.
Lawful basis (UK GDPR Article 6)
- Contract: processing your chats, documents and account info to deliver the service.
- Legitimate interest: security logging, fraud prevention, service improvement.
- Consent: optional product update emails (you can opt out at any time).
Sub-processors
The companies that process data on our behalf:
- OpenAI, Inc. — chat completions, voice transcription. Zero data retention contractually agreed; data not used to train.
- Anthropic, PBC. — chat completions (when configured). Same retention guarantees.
- Stripe, Inc. — payment processing.
- Brave Search — solicitor and legal-source web look-ups (your query only, no account data).
Retention
- Chats, documents, vault files: kept while your account is active.
- Deleted items: hard-deleted within 30 days from backups.
- Account closure: all personal data deleted within 30 days, except where law requires us to retain billing records (kept 7 years for HMRC).
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, port and object to the processing of your personal data. To exercise any of these rights:
- Use Settings → Privacy in the app for instant export or deletion.
- Or email privacy@lawbud.co.uk — we respond within 14 days.
- You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Important — what we are not
LAW-BUD is not a regulated legal services provider. Our outputs are general legal information, not legal advice. For matters where the stakes are high (court hearings, criminal allegations, contracts of value), you should retain a solicitor regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (England & Wales) or the Law Society of Scotland.
Children
LAW-BUD is for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from minors.
Changes
We will email you about any material changes to this policy at least 14 days before they take effect. Minor edits (typos, clarifications) are made without notice.
